Periapical X-rays show the whole tooth — from the crown, to beyond the root where the tooth attaches into the jaw. Each periapical X-ray shows all teeth in one portion of either the upper or lower jaw.

In chronic periapical periodontitis (granuloma) after the root canal is filled, the healing process is followed every 6 months through X-ray pictures, where special attention is paid to check if there is reduction of the size of the granuloma or the cyst.
