Meyerbeer’s Les Huguenots, Le Prophète and Robert le Diable are among those, and so is this sweet little opera by Georges Bizet in his pre- Carmen days. But The Pearl Fishers has not fared very well, on record or in the opera houses. Too often, even nowadays, the score is truncated. An arid and wild beach on the island of Ceylon. There are a few huts made of bamboo and palmleaves; in the distance, on a rock overhanging the sea, the ruins of an old pagoda and the ocean sparkling under a dazzling sun.

At the beginning of 2020, Les Pêchers de Perles (The Pearl Fishers), jumped out at me, and i listened to this Aria called, Je crois entendre encore (I believe I hear it yet), also known as “Nadir’s Aria”. It’s from the well-known author of the Opera Carmen, Georges Bizet, who composed it in 1863.

It was even used in the film Gallipoli.
